Artist Spotlight: Matoma
The soul-moving DJ turns heads across all nations!
As electronic music is starting to move in many different directions, one of the more constant is those in the direction of the tropical, feel good tracks. With known artists such as Kygo crossing the barriers between the typical EDM DJ and a joyful concert, new to the scene breakout Matoma has placed his magical touch on big hits such as "Old Thing Back", "Feelin' Right (Everything is Nice)", and most recently "False Alarm", which has reached as high as #4 on the top "Shazaamed" (music played through Shazaam Aplication) songs in South Africa!
Originally from Norway, Tom Straete Lagergren, or Matoma, was born in 1991 and initially started out as many other artists do, playing the classical piano as a child. As his talents and knowledge began to grow, he began to listen to his older brothers original electronic albums from legends like Paul van Dyk, Tiesto and Armin van Buuren. This then evolved, throughout his teens and became something he wanted to pursue in the future. After high school, he received a bachelor's degree in Music Technology from the Norweigen University of Science and Technology and it became evident that he was making a move the world would notice.
He found his niche remixing songs from huge hit artists such as Jessie J and Akon and in 2015 he scored a monster hit with his rendition Notorious B.I.G's "Old Thing Back". Since then Lagergren has been on fire and has been making his rounds in the studio as well as on some of the biggest stages and festivals. Keep your eyes peeled for this star to make waves and look out for him at festivals like Ultra South Africa coming up in February 2017.
